As you have probably learned there has to be modifications made to your grinder in order to make it usable for sharpening your wood working tools. Once you have done that then you are ready to move on.
There are several types of grinders some more common then others. The dry grinder for example is the most commonly known one. If you need to purchase one then there some specific things that, you are going to want. The wheel size should be at least 8" because then you won't end up with as much hollow grinding. If you have noticed that you have small depressions occurring in the tool when you are sharpening it with a dry grinder it's because the wheel has too tight of a radius. You can reduce the chances of this happening with the larger wheels.

Dry grinders have their place in tool sharpening but they have their downfalls as well. They can be hard on your chisels because the grinder tends to overheat the edges. Then the chisels become weak. Another problem is when you are performing the grinding procedures there are materials that form causing a glaze on the stone. This means it won't be as effective. If this happens then you have to re condition it by using a dressing tool.
An ideal way for sharpening your tools is with wet grinding. To begin with, you are going to eliminate the problems that we pointed out with the dry sharpening. Dry stones tend to run at a higher speed than the wet ones. With the wet grinding, you still have the horizontal or vertical choices so you have not lost that advantage although most woodworkers prefer the vertical system. What happens here is the stone remains partly submerged in a water trough so it is always being kept wet. You will find that you want to work with the larger stone. The finish you end up with will be much flatter and more desirable. So the advantage here is a flatter surface and the disadvantage is water constantly dripping onto the stone.
Along with your grinder, you will want at least some of the accessories that can be used with it. There are grinding jigs, rest and guides. Then you will most certainly want to have a dressing grindstone so you can grind the grinding wheel. You need to maintain a flat wheel to get superior sharpening results on the woodworking tools.
You will want felt wheel for perfect polishing of your tools.
Not too many woodworkers realize that sanders are a great way for sharpening tools as well. There are the belt sanders as well as drum sanding that can be utilized. Just learning the dos and don't and the proper techniques will go a long way in helping you to use equipment that you may already have.
When it comes to sharpening your woodworking tools, you will get the best results by making informed decisions on the best method for you and what you want to invest by way of sharpening tools.
